ALLENDALE, Mich. — Keeping children warm and safe is almost always on the minds of parents. However, what if you can’t afford a coat for your child? For many, that is a luxury that many just can’t afford. One group at Grand Valley State University is hoping to help those people.
The Union Local Number and the GVSU Facilities Services have set up collection boxes across campus, for students, instructors and staff to drop off and donate new or gently used children’s coats, from sizes five to eighteen, along with adult sizes, for boys and girls.
“With the economy the way it is, coats are much more in need for, you know, people who are unemployed,” said Sally Alder, an organizer from the GVSU Facilities Department.
The collection runs through Nov. th. At that point, the coats will be donated to local schools, who will decide how best to distribute the coats based on their needs.
Alder says she knows of at least twenty coats collected already, and knows of others who have promised to donate in the near future.
Collection boxes are set up at the Allendale and Grand Rapids campuses.
